Intro to DIR is a workshop to introduce the diver to the DIR philosophy, equipment and skills


Description


The workshop introduces the diver to the DIR philosophy, DIR equipment and DIR skills. 

DIR philosopy presentations include a discussion on team diving, DIR protocols and situational awareness

A thorough discussion of DIR equipment is presented

DIR skills presented include
  1. Frog Kick 

  2. Backward Kick 

  3. Helicopter Turn 

  4. Basic 5

    Regulator Removal
    Regulator Exchange
    Modified S-drill (Shared Air Drill)
    Mask Clear
    Mask Removal
  5. S-Drill (Shared Air Drill)


Emphasis of the workshop is on introduction of the skills. No certification is provided at the end of the workshop but each participant will received an individual critique. Video will be shot and each participant will receive a DVD of the skills session.
Course participants are actively encouraged to engage in skills dives on a regular basis following completion of the course and to enroll in a GUE Fundamentals Course.

Typical Course Schedule


The workshop is typically taught in one of two formats:

  1. 2 Evenings with 1 lecture and 1 pool session/video review
  2. 1 Weekend Day with lecture in the morning and pool session/video review in the afternoon

Workshop Prerequisies



  • 16 years of age
  • OW certification

Preferred Equipment Configuration


Regulators and DIR Hose Configuration



  • 5ft or 7 ft Primary Regulator Hose (7ft recommended) 

  • 22" to 24" Necklace Regulator Hose 

  • 24" to 26" SPG Hose

Backplate and Wings DIR Configuration



  • Stainless Steel or Aluminum Backplate with web harness and hardware. Shoulder straps and waist strap should be of a single piece of webing with 3 D-Rings, one on each shoulder and one on the left hip.

Depth measuring and time keeping device mounted on the right wrist

Full blade fins such as Scubapro Jet Fins or Turtle Fins, no split fins

Participants in the Intro to DIR workshop may not have an entire DIR gear configuration, participants should contact me prior to the workshop to discuss current gear configuration and so we can arrange to have sufficient gear for the in-water sessions.
