Intro to Tech
Introduction
The NAUI Into to Tech course provides the foundation for moving
into Technical Diving. The course provides a solid foundation in a
wide range of DIR skills and an introduction to DIR gear
configuration. All dives are are done in a DIR doubles gear
configuration. The course is typically accomplished with 2 3-4 hour
evening lectures and 2 full days of diving.
Who
THe course is geared for the accomplished Open Water Recreational Diver. The DIR skills introduced during the course will benefit the recreational diver and provide a solid foundation of skills for moving beyond the realm of recreational diving.
Course Description
The course is typically run to the following schedule.
Evening 1 : The course begins with 3 to 4 hour PowerPoint based lecture on gear configurations and a discussions of the skills to be cover thru the course. Videos of the each of the skills will be reviewed and each divers gear will be reviewed and fitted.
Evening 2: A second lecture session where DIR philosophy, gases and an intro to deco theory including dissolved gas and Free phase models will be the major topics.
Dive Day 1 The day begins with topside dry runs of the course skills, followed by 2 dives which will be video-taped. Following the dives the tapes will be reviewed and discussed. On Day 1 DIR trim, a variety of fin kicks (frog kick, backwards kick, helicopter turns), the Basic 5, Shared Air procedures and Valves drill will be introduced.
Dive Day 2 Building on the skills from Dive Day 1 we will fine tune the kicks and Shared Air Drills and move on to Ascents, Running Deco, Shared Air Ascents and deploying a SMB from 30 foot depth in blue water. Students will also demostrate rescuing a oxygen toxing diver from depth.
You will be evaluated for the NAUI Intro to Tech certification card The successful completion of the course enables the diver to continue with NAUI Technical Training.
Requirements
- Minimum age of 18
- Compete EnjoyTheDive registration process
- Open Water Certification
- Nitrox Certification
- Ability to swim 300 yards in 14 minutes
- All participants must be non-smokers
Guideline
- All dives will take place in 20 to 40 feet of depth.
- Max pp02 of 1.2
- Double tanks required
- DIR gear configuration required
- No deco or stage bottles required
- Max of 4:1 Student to Instructor Ratio.
Equipment
DIR gear equipment configuration is designed to be simple, balanced, efficient and consistent. All students are required to complete the course in a DIR gear configuration.
- Backplate and Wings BC System
- Stainless Steel or Aluminum backplate with one piece web
harness and hardware.
- Back inflate style Wing
- Wrist mounted depth and time measuring device
- Wrist mounted compass
- Non-split fins - Scubapro Jet Fins or Turtle Fins
recommended.
- Cutting device mounted on the waist strap
- Wetnotes, X-notes or equivalent
- One spool with 100 feet of line
- Surface Marker Bouy or Lift Bag
- Exposure suit appropriate for environment
- Cylinders
- A Balanced Double tank configuration
- No stage or decompression bottle
- Regulators with DIR hose configuration
- 7 foot Primary Regulator hose
- 22" or 24" Necklace Regulator hose
- 24" or 26" SPG hose
- Appropriate length BC inflator hose
- Optional Recommended Equipment
- Waist mounted canister light with Goodman handle.
- Waist mounted argon bottle rig.
